The safest Perth suburbs in 2024

15 July 2024

Using the latest WA Police data, we ranked all 265 Perth SA2 areas by safety score. Here's what the data says about crime across the metro area.

Safety is consistently the top concern for Perth residents searching for a new suburb. Using WA Police annual crime statistics, we compute a safety score for every Perth SA2 area — accounting for total offences, violent crime, property crime, and weighted severity.

The scoring model normalises raw crime counts against population (offences per 1,000 residents) and applies severity weights across offence categories. Violent offences are weighted more heavily than property crimes, which in turn outweigh minor offences.

, , and consistently sit at the top of safety rankings. These are established, lower-density suburbs in the western corridor with naturally lower crime rates. On the eastern fringe, suburbs like and also score highly — partly due to lower population density and fewer commercial premises that attract property crime.

At the lower end of the safety scale, suburbs near the Perth CBD and tend to score lower — a pattern seen in most capital cities, where higher foot traffic and nighttime economy activity correlates with more recorded offences.

It's worth noting that crime statistics reflect reported crime only. Some categories, particularly domestic violence, are known to be under-reported. Our safety score should be read as a guide, not a definitive ranking. The full methodology is documented on the About page.

Data note: All figures in this article are derived from publicly available datasets — ABS 2021 Census, state and territory crime statistics, and OpenStreetMap. Scores are relative rankings, not absolute measurements. See the About page for full methodology.
